WHAT THE GUIDEBOOKS SAY:
Lonely Planet Costa Rica "This new project, which was declared by presidential decree a "Project of National Public Interest" at its inception in 1997, is 2 km east of La Virgin. The aim of the museum and lodge is to present the indigenous experience and heighten visitors’ awareness of both the cultural and natural history of the rain forest before entering the reserve. The lodge is modeled after a 15th century pre-Colombian village with conical Palenque-style buildings and palm-thatch roofs...24 private rooms all have private baths and Internet connections (!), some have views of the valley and reserves, and others lookout over the orchards and gardens. The restaurant serves meals incorporating spices and edible flowers used in pre-Colombian indigenous cuisine, as well as fresh fruits and vegetables from the surrounding gardens and orchards.
"A work in progress, this complex is an eco-model for the Unesco World Conservation Foundation and supplies its own natural energy needs with solar, wind and water power, as well as an ecologically safe sewage and waste management system. Jean Pierre Knockaert is the designer/architect and on-hand visionary and president of the Landscape Foundation Belgium, the project’s non-profit developer. A conference center and theater are planned by December 2001 when the museum complex is completed. Visitors enter the 350 hectare private Biological reserve by a 250 meter suspension bridge and canopy sky walks and guided tours of the gardens and reserve are available."
The New Key to Costa Rica Ulysses Press:
"This is a beautiful ecolodge on the banks of the Sarapiquí, patterned on a 15th century pre-Columbian village."
COSTA RICA EXPEDITIONS DESCRIPTION:
Designed by a group of eco-conscious European architects, each of the six circular, thatched structures has eight spacious rooms with covered outside terraces. The restaurant overlooks the river and the Tirimbina rainforest reserve. Cuisine includes fresh fruit and edible flowers from the surrounding botanical gardens. There is an education and research center and solar energy is used to power the hotel. Hot climate.
FROM THE HOTEL'S BROCHURE OR WEB SITE:
The architecture of the Sarapiquí project is inspired by the indigenous pre-columbian architecture of the Palenques. The reference to Palenque structures forms an intrinsic element in the entire Sarapiquí concept: the history of nature and its relation to mankind. Moreover, the symbolic value of the circular design refers to the everlasting circle of life.
The architecture gives the entire project particular dynamics and emanation, which visitors will especially experience during their visit. The ecolodge consists of four palenque units: one central unit with lobby, restaurant, bar, shop and offices and three guest units with each eight exclusive rooms (a total 24 rooms).
All rooms have a covered terrace, fans, complete bathroom, telephone and internet connection. All the units are located in the lush gardens and orchards of the property and are connected with a covered walkway. Eight rooms have an outstanding view on the rainforest canopy and the Sarapiqui River.
