WHAT THE GUIDEBOOKS SAY
Discovering the Best of Costa Rica (Media Wiley, 2005) - “Originally a rustic research facility, this lodge has upgraded quite a bit over the years and now features comfortable rooms with impressive views of the Arenal Volcano. There are excellent trails to nearby lava flows and a beautiful waterfall. Toucans frequent the trees near the lodge and howler monkeys provide the wake-up calls."
COSTA RICA EXPEDITIONS DESCRIPTION
Set on a ridge near Arenal Lake, this lodge offers "front-row seating" for the volcano's fireworks displays. The 43-room property is on a private reserve with good walking trails and scenic waterfall.
Cool climate. FROM THE HOTEL'S WEB SITE
Set high on a ridge a mere 1.7 miles from Arenal Volcano, Arenal Observatory Lodge offers the adventurous traveler front-row seating for one of the world's most thrilling fireworks displays - a volcanic eruption. The Lodge features 43 rooms in various buildings spread over the property. Five rooms are fully equipped for disabled travelers, with rooms, bathrooms, hallways, parking areas and even the new swimming pool designed accordingly. Most have a view of the volcano and all overlook verdant gardens. Everywhere you can feel the volcano's commanding presence. The dining room overlooks the volcano southern slope with floor to ceiling windows and opens to a wide deck to enjoy a majestic panoramic view of the lake and Arenal volcano.
At the Observatory Lodge, nature is bursting at the seams. Tropical flora and fauna abound about the Arenal lodge, while the majestic volcano and its fiery outbursts reflect off the mirror lake at her feet – all this right outside your Arenal hotel room at the Observatory Lodge. The lodge offers daily complimentary walks led by resident naturalist guides and many other activities such as: horseback riding, birding in Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge, canoeing, natural hot springs and float and rafting trips.
